In 1972, the iconic Sanford & Benedict vineyard was the first vineyard planted in the cool climate Sta Rita Hills. Comprised almost entirely of Monterey Shale from a landslide that occurred 10,000 years ago, this vineyard was planted to VitisVinifera on its own roots. At the time, a huge yet calculated risk on the par t of Michael Benedict. Today, the original plantings are still healthy and consistently producing magnificent and distinctive Pinot Noir fruit. Owned and farmed by the Terlato Family, the vision for Sanford is to produce wines that “tell the tale of the place”, with minimal intervention.

The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is where it all began. In 1971 this was the first vineyard planted in what became the world-class, cool-climate Sta. Rita Hills appellation. This iconic vineyard now contains the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Santa Barbara County.
The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is a wine of precision, beautifully layered and nuanced. Rose petals, white pepper, and lavendar all grace this racy wine. The palate is elegant, and seamless, with a pure and suave texture. This wine is delicious now yet has the balance and structure to age gracefully for some time. It is a natural for richer fish dishes, roast chicken and even game.
